HIGHERED: via KSTP, VERBATIM: “If you or your child goes to a Minnesota State college or university, there’s a good chance it’s going to become more expensive…We’re talking about tuition, and while nothing is set in stone, it could increase as much as 18% over the next two years….The price hikes would impact the Minnesota State system, which makes up more than 30 colleges and universities. System leaders say state support is a leading factor for the expected hikes and say what’s been proposed so far isn’t enough to leave tuition where it’s at. OLSON: “We know that Minnesota is facing a budget shortfall as a state, and that isn’t just for this current legislative biennium; it goes into the next one as well. And so they just won’t have the resources for us,” Scott Olson, chancellor for Minnesota State, told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS. WATCH/READ: https://fluence-media.co/42FGY7x
AGRICULTURE: via Fox 9, VERBATIM: “For months, elected officials and industry leaders have raised the alarm. They fear farmers are headed for deep trouble amidst the ongoing trade war and tariff uncertainty and bailing them out will be far more expensive than it was in 2018, when exports to China took a big hit…On Wednesday, Minnesota State Auditor Julie Blaha joined a national virtual press conference to sound alarm over newly imposed 10% tariffs on all imports. As other countries respond with tariffs of their own, farm exports could take a huge hit around the world…The president of the Minnesota Farmers Union says the alarm is justified. Gary Wertish worries we’re on the verge of a crisis like what we saw in the 1980s if trade deals aren’t finalized very quickly.” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/3RlXUL6
LONGTERMCARE: In response to Governor Walz statement that, during his Medicaid town hall, that WALZ: “If you think we're in a crisis now, especially for seniors living in rural Minnesota, cut Medicaid and find out what happens. There's no way the state of Minnesota can come close to back filing what's lost.”…The Long Term Care Imperative releases the following statement, VERBATIM “We share Governor Walz’s stated concern for rural senior care in Minnesota, and we appreciate him sounding the alarm on Medicaid cuts at the federal level. We hope this means he is no longer pushing for similar Medicaid cuts at the state level that he has included in each of his budget proposals this session, which would have a devastating impact on older adults. 88% of rural Minnesotans believe seniors deserve care in their own communities — a core value the Governor’s budget puts at risk. As Minnesota lawmakers work to finalize budget bills in the coming weeks, we urge them to prioritize funding for senior care. In the absence of that, Governor Walz is right: Seniors, and those who provide them with care, will certainly be facing a crisis.”

NURSES: via KARE 11, VERBATIM: “Hospitals across the country are working to figure out how to address a shortage of nurses, [but] Children’s Minnesota is reporting significant progress in closing this gap. In 2023, the healthcare system made a conscious effort to change the way it recruits and retains nurses. [Employees] were invited to form a task force to survey nurses to learn more about the changes they would like to see in their profession. … These efforts focused on recruitment and retention appear to be working. … In 2023, Children’s Minnesota spent around $40 million on temporary nurses. That number dropped to around $17 million in 2024.” READ/WATCH: https://fluence-media.co/4lzOCZC
NORTHSTAR: via MPR, VERBATIM: The future without service is a big question mark for the six cities in the northwest metro. Some municipalities are looking at the infrastructure investments and wondering who will maintain them…Local officials from the cities and counties along the route met last week with the Met Council to discuss the potential plans if service ends. Calvin Portner, Elk River city administrator, attended the meeting over Zoom. PORTNER: “Obviously things are still in flux right now the Legislature, so there weren’t a lot of details,” Portner said… Portner said Met Council chair Charlie Zelle “assured everyone that the next project that’s going to come in, possibly a bus line, will be a higher-level service overall.”…But a bus line is tricky because Elk River does not fall under the Met Council’s jurisdiction.” READ: https://fluence-media.co/4inTTRn

FINSTAD: via Rochester Post Bulletin, VERBATIM: “GOP Congressman Brad Finstad defended President Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs against other countries, arguing that Trump was seeking to address an uneven playing field. … ‘There was a shake-up needed to get people back to the table,’ Finstad said during a 45-minute interview at the Post Bulletin. … Finstad defended the use of tariffs against U.S. allies and trading partners because it showed that the U.S. was serious, [but] it would behoove the Trump Administration to lock in [new trade] deals as quickly as possible to show progress, given the disruption and uncertainty the tariffs had created. … Asked if Finstad would support legislation that would take back Congress’s trade authority from the president, he said, ‘maybe.’” READ: https://fluence-media.co/44qeaSP
